Not at all. You can listen to podcasts directly from your computer. If you want to take it with you, any MP3 player will work.

Do I need any special software to listen to podcasts?

No, you can listen to podcasts directly through your web browser(may require the most recent version of your browser). To subscribe to a podcast -- which allows for automatic downloads of new material -- you will need a music player that supports podcasts, such as iTunes 4.9 or greater(click here for the free iTunes download).
